Regretsy's Crafter School Special: Make Your Own Snooki Mask

When Savings.com asked me to create a weekly DIY tutorial for their readers, I was overwhelmed. I was also drunk, which is why I said yes.

But I think you'll agree that I'm a natural for a job like this, because I have almost no crafting ability. And if there's one thing the handmade movement has taught us, it's that you don't actually need talent to craft, and everyone has to pretend to like it anyway.

And speaking of no talent, how great is Jersey Shore? Really great, that's how. And if all those kids did was smoke cigarettes and vomit on themselves, it would be enough for me. But God love them, they've got so much more on the ball. Did you know that three of them are already published authors? And Snooki's book is on the New York Times Bestseller List! It all seems so effortless for them. Probably because they didn't actually write anything.

Wouldn't we all want a taste of that life? You bet we would. And today, I'm going to show you how to see the world through Snooki's eyes. Soon you'll be living the dream, one happy hour at at time.THE SNOOKI MASK

To do this craft, you will need:

A copy of "A Shore Thing" by Snooki, which you no doubt already have
A color printer
Printable card stock
2 20" inch lengths of ribbon
Scissors
Hole punch

pic1

1. Snooki's picture on the cover is smaller than most human heads, due to the size of her brain. To determine how much to enlarge the image to fit your head, measure your face from ear to ear. Now take that measurement and divide it by 5.5. The number you get is the percentage to increase the image.

pic2

My measurement was about 9 inches, so I figured it this way:

9 / 5.5 = 1.63 = 163% enlargement.

Alternatively, you could just go to Kinkos and keep making copies until you get one you can use.

2. Print the image on light card stock using the landscape setting. You could also laminate it to make it easier to wipe off ketchup and lip gloss. Cut out the image and set aside.

pic3

3. Punch out the center of each eye. Make two small holes on either side for stringing. This can be done with a hole punch, or for added authenticity, a lit cigarette.

pic4

4. Fold the ribbon in half and pull it through the holes, securing with a slip knot. You might want to reinforce the holes with tape to prevent tearing.

pic5

5. While Snooki is already decorated, you might choose to add rhinestones or fake eyelashes for a 3D effect. You might also coat the bottom of your face in BBQ sauce to approximate her skin tone.

And there you have it. A Snooki mask that is not only beautiful, but functional! The half-face design allows you to smoke and do shots with ease. And once you've blacked out, the mask acts as an eyeshade, to insure a pleasant night's sleep on the floor.

pic6

Would you like to own a Snooki mask crafted by my very own arthritic hands? Well, now you can! I made a few of these while I was putting this tutorial together, and they're up for grabs. Just let me know in the comments where you would wear your Snooki mask. The three best answers will get a mask and a special surprise!

YouTube Time Machine helps you reminisce with YouTube videos from a certain year

yttm

YTTM apparently stands for "YouTube Time Machine," although that's not specifically mentioned on the site. What it does is very easy to understand, though. You move a slider to a specific year between 1860 and 2010, and you get a bunch of YouTube videos related to that year. Yes, I said 1860 (that's not a typo).

Not all hits are spot-on, though. When I chose 1972, I got a video from 1970. So, I guess you could say YMMV with YTTM (sorry, couldn't help myself there). But for the most part, the hits are relevant. I think it just takes the year from the video's name on YouTube.

You can narrow your search down by categories, such as Video Games, Television, Commercials, Current Events, Sports, Movies, and Music. I'm afraid there are not many video game related videos from the 19th century, though.

One detail which annoyed me was that toggling a filter reloads the entire page. It's as if AJAX was never invented - you click a button, and suddenly the whole page blinks out and reloads. I hope they get that fixed.

Notwithstanding this one quirk, YTTM is a nice way to travel through time. Just dial in a year, and watch the videos. When you've had enough of a certain clip, you can just click Watch next video and be transported to the next one - no searching involved.

Car Maintenance Money Wasters

People waste lots of money on things they don't need.  Depending on how many miles you drive a year, any dollars wasted on car maintenance can really add up over time.  Here are three of the biggest and a funny picture of what not to do.
1)  Premium Gas - Unless you car was designed to run on higher octane gasoline, you are getting absolutely nothing for your extra 25-50 a gallon.  Either in the owners manual, at www.fueleconomy.gov, or sometimes on a sticker where the fuel filler is will be a minimum suggested octane for your vehicle--or just the words "Regular" or "Premium."

The octane number is basically a rating of how much abuse the fuel will take before auto-combusting.  The problem with auto-combustion, whether the "knock" or the "ping," is that the chances are not good of it occurring at the precise moment the computer in your car would fire the spark plug.  Then it would have to get lucky thousands of times a minute.

About the only cars that will benefit from running more octane than the minimum are turbo or supercharged cars.  As you add boost you need more octane--and if the computer and sensors hear the start of pre-ignition, they will impose a lower limit to you fun.  So in a turbo or supercharged car, if the manual says you can, go ahead and run regular, but know you aren't going to be using all the power you paid for when you got the car.  For more information, check out the full instrumented test Car & Driver did ten years ago.

2) 3 Month/3,000 Mile Oil Changes - Modern cars and modern oils just don't need to be replaced as frequently.  Sure you're only doing it 4-7 times a year, but you could be doing it 2-3 times a year.  Figure you could save $50 a year, at least.

The benefits of changing the oil so frequently is not in the clean oil itself, it is in having a knowledgeable professional looking at your car and spotting potential problems.  If you have been taking you car to the local quick lube place, this does not qualify.  Most modern cars have recommended oil change intervals of 5,000 miles or more.

If you don't drive very far or very frequently, it's recommended you change the oil at least once a year.  My truck, a 2005 Chevy, has a computer that monitors temperature, hours run, load, and other factors and tells me when it's time for an oil change.  I have never been told to do it in less than 7,000 miles.  You do need to check the level and make sure you have enough in there.  I would check the oil level every 1,000 miles or once a month.

It is true that clean oil is more slippery than dirty oil, but there is no need to change it twice as often as needed.  Based on my history with my truck, I plan on changing oil every six months, and no sooner.  The reason for the year and the mileage is that acids and condensation can build up in the crankcase even when the engine isn't being run and ruin the oil.

The last reason not to change oil too often is the amount of oil it wastes.  Oil is a limited resource, and the most optimistic estimates say only 50% of old motor oil is being properly collected to be recycled or burned for heat or energy.

3) Fuel Economy Gimmicks & Chemicals - Big oil, big rubber and big car companies are not keeping things from you.  The less specific the ads for these things are, the more the seem to sell.  If GM, Honda, Toyota, VW or anyone else could spend a few extra dollars to improve the mileage of their cars, they would.  Maybe they wouldn't do it right away, but don't you think they'd add that feature when gas suddenly shot up over $4?

Typing "Fuel Economy" into the eBay Motors search yields magnets, krystalizing fuel initiators, vortex generating swirly metal things, PCV Enhancers and many things to make water into fuel.  None of them work.

Don't take my word for it, Popular Mechanics has been testing these things scientifically for years and have yet to find one that does anything.  They do an update of gas saving gadgets just about every year. If you want to get better fuel economy slow down and follow some of the fuel efficiency tips I blogged about last year.

4) Anything Adhesive to "Improve" the Appearance - A picture is worth a thousand words.

Fresh off a pair of steamy performances at Sunday night's Grammy Awards, Rihanna is doubling down on her upcoming summer tour. In addition to adding 10 more dates to the Loud outing, the singer has also invited "F--- You" singer Cee Lo Green to join her for the tour, which is scheduled to begin on June 4 in Baltimore.

With the 10 additional dates announced on Wednesday (February 16), the North American Loud tour is now up to 17 shows, with promoter Live Nation promising that more stops could be added in the future. The added dates include stops in Montreal, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Houston, Dallas, Albuquerque and Boston. Tickets for the new dates will go on sale on Friday (February 18).

"I'm a huge fan of Cee Lo since his days with Goodie Mob and with Gnarls Barkley. He's a musical genius, continually reinventing himself, and I'm thrilled to have him join me on tour," said Rihanna in a statement announcing the new dates.

"I want to thank Rihanna for inviting me on our version of '50 First Dates,' only difference is she's unforgettable fine," Cee Lo added in the statement. "Don't tell her I have a crush on her, don't wanna mess everything up. But honestly it's an honor and a blessing to be able to go out with a talent such as hers and I look forward to doing my part to make the tour unforgettable for the fans that come out and see us."

The pair will have plenty to chat about on the road, as they both won Grammys on Sunday night, with Rihanna picking up Best Dance Record for "Only Girl in the World" and Green taking Best Urban/Alternative Performance for "Forget You." Both were also winners on Tuesday night at England's Brit Awards.

Rihanna recently premiered the bondage-themed clip for her latest single, "S&M," which spurred a lawsuit from fashion photographer David LaChapelle, who claimed that it was "directly derived" from his work.

Hulu gets a brand new video player, still no HTML5

Web TV site Hulu just introduced a new video player that's frankly pretty excellent, but the new features might be overshadowed by the ongoing debate over HTML5 support. It seems they can add all the features they want to their web player, but the users' focus is on enabling HTML5 playback so Hulu will play on iPads and iPhones. The problem isn't that HTML5 vids aren't ready for users, it's that they're not up to speed in terms of advertising and analytics (which are, um, how Hulu makes money).

Okay, so, no HTML5, but the goodies in the new player will still make Hulu watchers very happy. Adaptive bitrate streaming is one of the smartest things Hulu's ever done. This feature lets Hulu dynamically match video quality to your available bandwidth, meaning that instead of stuttering or stalling when you get some lag, Hulu will just drop the bandwidth of the video so it can keep playing.

Another feature that proves Hulu is listening to users is ad volume normalization. Sometimes ads in Hulu are so much louder than the shows that it can be startling when one comes on. No more! Now the ads are in line with the volume of the show you're watching.

Navigating is easier, thanks to thumbnail previews while you're jumping around in a video, so you can see if you've found the spot you're looking for. The player even looks better. It's all chromeless now, making for a sleek look with the controls out of the way. It's also 25% bigger by default. Basically, Hulu just stepped up its game in a huge way. Personally, I think HTML5 can wait a little bit longer if it means the Hulu devs are spending their time on stuff like this.

YouTube finishes transcoding 80% of video catalog to WebM

YouTube loves WebM
Ever since Google announced its 'open source' WebM video format, they've been slowly but surely transcoding the entire YouTube video library. According to an update from John Luther, the Product Manager for WebM, while speaking at the Streaming Media West conference, as it stands now, 80% of all video available through YouTube is in the WebM format -- a significant amount of video indeed.

This is good news for proponents of the VP8 video codec and the WebM container, as the more content that's actually available in the format, the more support it's likely to get. On that front, most of the major browsers natively support WebM, with Opera 10, Chrome 6, and Firefox 4 all on board, while third-party codecs are available for use in both Safari and IE. Whether WebM and VP8 will remain free from patent suits, only time will tell -- but Google's certainly full steam ahead.

Facebook for Android updated, chat and push notifications added

Facebook just pushed out a much-needed update to its mobile users with version 1.5 of its Android app. This particular update's an important one because it adds two major pieces that were formerly missing: Chat and push notifications. Unfortunately, the push notifications only work on devices running Froyo or newer, and for everyone else there is still a painful lack of notifications for comments, likes, and wall posts.

First word on the update from users has been a mix of absolute joy, since they can finally use a single app for all their Facebook needs, and utter scorn -- due to an apparent increase in bugginess (lots of force-closures).

Commenters in both the Market and on various Android forums also seem less than impressed by the seemingly intentional shunning that the Zuckerberg clan is giving to notifications settings. Users whose devices can benefit from push are sure to be slightly happier, assuming it actually works. Everybody else, and that's a lot of people, will continue to be stuck with an app that they need to check manually if they care about what's happening on their wall -- which is where most of Facebook's interactions take place. Sadly, there are just as many people reporting that push notifications don't work on their Froyo-running phones as there are who say it's working. There's no section in the app's settings that confirm push is active, either.

In the end, bugs are sure to be taken care of with another, smaller update, and push notifications for some is better than none at all. That means version 1.5 invariably has more to offer than 1.4 did, it just hurts to see a company with Facebook's resources fall short in something as basic as an Android app. QR code after the break!

Facebook launches real-time comments

Facebook comments

Facebook is riding the 'real-time' train hard these days. Following yesterday's release of real-time Insights for page owners, it appears Facebook has now rolled out live commenting. 'Live', as in comments now update in real-time, without the need to refresh the page. Discovered by mistake by developer Jesse Stay, it seems like this only happens on your Feed or Profile pages. Many people have seen this in action on their profiles, but since Facebook has not issued an official announcement of the feature it's unclear whether this is the beginning of a worldwide roll-out, or just a small-time test.

Real-time comments are also available on Friendfeed, a service which Facebook acquired in 2009 and from which it was known to 'borrow' features even before that.

A demo video of the new feature at work is available after the break courtesy of The Next Web.

Better Grooveshark user script shows lyrics, hides ads, adds current song to tab title

Better Grooveshark user script
Better Grooveshark is a user script that works with Grooveshark's redesigned HTML5-based user interface, and enhances your Grooveshark experience in a few cool ways. First off, the ads are hidden. Those of you who know (and love) what an ad blocker is will see no benefit from this, but for the majority of those surfing the Internet these days, this may improve the look of the site and remove a distraction.

Better Grooveshark also adds the title of the currently playing song to the title of the tab where Grooveshark is open in your browser. This will let you know exactly which song is playing at a quick glance.

But perhaps the most useful feature that this user script adds to Grooveshark is the lyrics sidebar that it places on the right side of the site. Once you hit Search, you'll be able to choose which site Better Grooveshark should get lyrics from. Possible results are then aggregated in a dropdown menu.

Better Grooveshark used to also 'emulate' some features which are normally reserved for those opting for a paid Grooveshark subscription, such as last.fm scrobbling support, crossfading and removing ads (as opposed to just hiding them). However, the developer has recently decided to take those features out of the script in order to support the work of the Grooveshark team.

Better Grooveshark is available from Userscripts.org and should work on Firefox with Greasemonkey, Safari, Chrome and Opera.

Three simple ways to watch YouTube (and other) videos with no distractions

vpure

It turns out people don't like clutter. Surprise! Not that YouTube's interface is all that cluttered, but sometimes I just want to watch my video without having to see it in full screen.

Well, it turns out that there's a whole genre of websites which specialize in removing all the crud and leaving the video: in other words, they generate spartan pages with your video embedded right into them, on a white or black background.

I found all three of these on the excellent MakeUseOf, which never fails as a source for a ton of cool web-related news and tools. Here goes:

  • ViewPure gives you a short link, and a blank/white background. What I like about it is that it also provides a text box for creating a new page; other sites only give you a bookmarklet which you're supposed to click while on the page for the video you want to watch. Very nice.
  • Silentube gives you a bookmarklet, but it actually worked also when I just appended the video URL to Silentube's URL, although it claimed that "Seemes something went wrong". If you're into bookmarklets, Silentube is a nice one.
  • Quietube is apparently a fierce competitor of Silentube (at least if you go by the name). It has one-upped its rival, since my URL-pasting trick worked just fine on this one. You also get a bookmarklet which you can just click when you're on the video page.

One thing I would like each of these sites to do -- that they currently don't -- is to take the highest-quality video from the site, or at least let me choose the quality. I suspect that if I use the bookmarklet they display whatever quality I am currently watching, though.

These are particularly handy when you want to send someone a link to a video, and you want to show them just the video so they can focus on how hilarious/interesting it is.

'Just Go With It' Narrowly Defeats Justin Bieber At Box Office

'Never Say Never' comes in right behind Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston rom-com.
By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Sway Calloway

A real-life wholesome teen did battle against a fictitious over-the-hill womanizer at the box office over the weekend as "Never Say Never" and "Just Go With It" fought a close contest for bucks. The economy was the real winner, as ticket sales surged overall by more than 30 percent, according to estimates. Disney's CG-animated "Gnomeo & Juliet" rounded out the top three with more than $25 million in revenue.

Justin Bieber's most die-hard Beliebers came out in droves to put the singing sensation's 3-D documentary into the #2 slot with a $30.3 million opening. As of press time, the figure was just a well-coiffed hair away from the estimated $31 million earned by "Just Go With It."

"I feel great," Bieber told MTV News backstage at the Grammys, where the 16-year-old Canadian sensation was both a nominee and a performer, shortly after news of his movie's huge opening hit. "I have so many amazing fans and they've been so supportive over these past few years and will continue to be supportive with my movie. I'm just excited. I have the best fans in the world."

"Never Say Never" was produced by Paramount (which, like MTV, is owned by Viacom). The studio worked tirelessly to activate Bieber's rabid fanbase in support of the movie, which focuses on his rise from obscurity to stardom. Special ticket packages costing $30 per head added an extra $700,000 to the film's opening, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It" opened strongly but will still have some distance to go in order to recoup its estimated $80 million production budget. Set in Hawaii, the romantic comedy-of-misunderstandings co-stars Jennifer Aniston and longtime Sandler pal Nick Swardson ("Grandma's Boy") but suffers from a 19 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, which averages reviews from critics.

And while it may sit atop the box office, "Just Go With It" attracted fewer people opening weekend than recent Sandler flicks like "Grown Ups" and "You Don't Mess With the Zohan."

"Gnomeo & Juliet," the other G-rated movie in the top 10 in addition to "Never Say Never," was bolstered by Elton John tunes and voice acting from James McAvoy and Emily Blunt in the title roles.

The only other new film widely released over the weekend was the Roman Army movie "The Eagle," starring Channing Tatum ("G.I. Joe"), which opened at a distant #4 with just $8.6 million.

"Single White Female" retread "The Roommate," starring Leighton Meester of "Gossip Girl" alongside Minka Kelly of "Friday Night Lights," came in at #5 with $8.4 million for a $26 million two-week total. "The Roommate" was made for just $16 million, making that a solid number.

Driven by renewed interest thanks to its multiple Oscar nominations, Best Picture front-runner "The King's Speech" came in at #6 with $8.4 million for a cumulative $93 million total. The English historical drama was made for even less money than "The Roommate" and is closing in on the $100 million mark — a feat commonly reserved for explosion-driven summer blockbusters.

"No Strings Attached" was #7 with $5.6 million. The Natalie Portman/ Ashton Kutcher rom-com has made $59.8 million since it opened four weeks ago. Portman is nominated in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards for "Black Swan," which was #14 this weekend with $2.1 million. The award-winning art-house flick is even closer to $100 million than "The King's Speech," with $99 million.

"Sanctum" followed "No Strings Attached" at #8 with $5.1 million. Executive produced by James Cameron, "Sanctum" has earned $17.5 million in two weeks with a production budget of $30 million.

Oscar contender "True Grit" and action-comedy "The Green Hornet" rounded out the top 10 with $3.7 million and $3.6 million, respectively. The Coen Brothers remake of the John Wayne Western has made $160 million in the past two months, while co-writer and star Seth Rogen's 3-D version of newspaper-heir-turned-vigilante "The Green Hornet" has made $92 million in the past five weeks.

Check out everything we've got on "Just Go With It" and "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never."

Sony's Crackle expands, brings free movies, TV shows to Canada

Filed under:

If there's one thing that users outside the U.S. find irritating about online video, it's the fact that we don't have access to many of the awesome services that our American chums do. Sony has struck a minor blow against geotarding today, however, with the expansion of Crackle.

Canadians can now enjoy Crackle's Sony-powered content as well. Most of it, anyway -- I'm not able to watch most movies. Mothra and Godzilla flicks do work, as do The Three Stooges. I'm willing to overlook the lack of complete access, though, since I can enjoy Patrick Warburton's antics as The Tick in the full-screen glory it deserves.

Crackle is definitely worth a bookmark if you're in Canada and looking for a place to watch free movies, TV shows, and cartoons on the Web.

Farkie: media downloader and convertor for YouTube, MySpace and more

There are a lot of ways to download videos from YouTube, a lot of ways to convert those videos, and a lot of ways to download music from MySpace. I'm used to thinking of all that as requiring a few different apps or web-based tools, but Farkie does it all. Farkie aims to be the only downloader you need for videos, music, flash games and other media on websites, and it's even got a Firefox add-on.

To use Farkie, you just have to paste the URL of the page you want to download from into Farkie's form, and let it do the rest. You'll get a list of all the media on the page (and check boxes for file types, so you can filter if there's a lot there), and you can download any of the available files via links.

It can even convert YouTube videos for you, into wmv, m4v, mov, and a bunch of other formats.
